La Traviata at IPACV

One of the most popular operas of all time, Verdi’s La Traviata, is coming to the Indio Performing Arts Center on Friday, Feb. 3. California Ballet Opera (CBO) will present the acclaimed work at 7 p.m. on opening night and repeat it with a matinee on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2:30 p.m.

Having just completed a highly successful run of Amahl and the Night Visitors, CBO has cast several of the leads from Amahl. The outstanding singers include well known local favorite Mark Almy as Germont (the Father). Almy will also direct a cast that features Cynthia Leigh (as
Violetta), a favorite soprano of many opera companies in Southern California, Mario Rios (as Alfredo), a recent graduate of University of Redlands where he sang the roles of Tamino and Ferrando. Other cast members include Elaine Wang Meyerhoffer, Michael Graham, Tony Hanlon, Bob Reinhagen and Kim Corrall. Musical Director and Accompanist is Knut Erik Jensen.

“This is the first in a series of mini-operas we plan to stage at IPAC,” said CBO Executive Director Bob Reinhagen. “We have shorted the running time to about an hour and a half and eliminated the chorus to fit the intimate space on stage in the Cabaret Theater.”

Indio Performing Arts Center is at 45175 Fargo Street in Indio.  Tickets are $15 and are available at the door or by calling California Ballet Opera at 760-342-3728. Theater-goers can pay with cash, checks, Mastercard or Visa.
La Traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on La dame aux Camélias (1852), a play which was adapted from the novel by Alexander Dumas, fils and was later made into the movie Camille.
